Drill the holes first of all and get that done and out of the way.
I do not recommend using WD40 or any petroleum products like gun oil because they will attack the polymer that is used in these kits. Just use soapy water and it actually works better if you do it right.
Also, you can save a ton of time by using "fret wire cutters", about $15-$20 at any online music store or Amazon. Those will get down and cut to the point where it's practically to the flats and all you need to do is use a square file for the corners and then use the files like you did and then the sanding paper. Use ALOT of patience and file those suckers to where they're smooth as glass and you'll get greater results, trust me!
As for the channel...ooh, everyone has their own methods but mine is patience and a round file (sanding not required, just give it a really good "once over") and make sure you follow the lines religiously! In other words, don't go past the limit on the guide.
