Before handling your new Ruger SR1911, make certain you know how to verify it is not loaded and be prepared to correctly unload it as well. Once you have learned this you will always ACTIVELY verify that your 1911 is clear before attempting to dry fire it and work with it on the bench. Always be aware of muzzle direction whenever you are working with any firearm.
