So Why Didn’t The Military Use Auto Loading Shotguns For There Trench Gun’s ?

 1084 Views
In General

In this video we will be exploring why the military stuck with a pump action shotgun for so incredibly long
The two samples I will be testing is the Winchester 1897 (M-97) and the Remington model 11 (M-11)
Both Shotgun’s were in competition in the Trench Gun spot
And the 1897 ultimately won but why ?
You would think a semi automatic would be a better pic right?

Sorry I am not going to watch this, Matt. Over half an hour video is a bit long. I could give the short answer why I believe (I can't prove it) the military did not use autoloading shotguns in trenches. Limited numbers is the main reason. Military gun trials. Mud, dirt, and filth might be another reason. Unreliability in filthy conditions cause them to be prone to jamming. Same could be said for but not so much with a pump gun. Even though they can jam too, they are more reliable in filthy conditions and there were more pump guns available than autoloaders anyway. The Browning A-5 and Remington M11 was available in limited numbers in WW1 but were mostly used for aerial combat training rather than actual combat. Six shotguns were available for use in WW1 and of those these two autoloaders. That was on the Allied side. The Swedish Sjögren shotgun saw limited use for sure by both the Allies and the Central powers. Used primarily by Norway.

@CRS Firearms : Got me. I don't know. Guess there was no real need when the pump guns did the job.

@RobertM: I mean do we really need to increase the rate of fire of a shotgun to semi-auto at close range? I guess if you are one guy facing a whole lot of threats.
