The big issue with this argument is not the weapon platform, it is the cartridge. 5.56x45 “NATO”, 7.62x51 “NATO”. It’s all about the agreement with NATO for compatibility with ammunition. Why go to another platform in the same same caliber when this one is proven. This won’t change until the primary calibers used by ground forces in NATO change or we leave NATO, which won’t happen. The specialty calibers like 6.8 might be adopted by special forces, like 300 Blackout or 458 Socom. Same thing.
