what machine can i get for under or around $800, and would such a machine work even though it isnt a 2-6k price range?

You can buy an Ender 3 for about $180 and spend about ~$100 on upgrades. Or a Prusa MK3 and build it yourself for about $800 ($1k prebuilt).
