I was told it was original to the rifle from 1952. It’s old for sure.

My favorite rifle of them all. My dad's rifle. I don't even own one thanks to their cost. I would gladly trade all my guns for my dad's service rifle. That M1 rifle would be priceless to me. Great way to "observe" (I would have said celebrate) Memorial Day with an M1 rifle. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, I do have a surplus M1 Carbine. :-) My dad was not particularly fond of it although he did hunt with one from a jeep in the Black Forest to supply food for German civilians during the war.

I had the opportunity to buy a M1 carbine from my wife’s uncles estate or the Garand. Would like to have had them both but unfortunately a little out of my price range. The Garand was the only way to go. I also got a 30-40 Kraft for next to nothing, but it just might be my favorite over the Grand. That would be something if you could find your Dads service rifle.Sounds like your father was a hero.

@NC Gun Guy : He carried that nine pound rifle across Europe from Normandy to the Elbe River. I have shot an M1 rifle and enjoyed every shot. It does not recoil as bad as you would think because of the weight. Sweet shooting rifle. I got my GM Inland M1 Carbine back in the late 80s or early 90s when a government warehouse in Virginia gave a bunch of Inland and Underwood carbines to Walmart to sell. All NRA certified good condition. I paid $150 for it and still have it. All original as far as I know.
