They provide a video history of WD-40 that explains it was developed specifically for NASA, but only as a moisture displacement mechanism. Some of the fuels used by NASA as rocket propellants tend to react badly to moisture and the environment (Cape Canaveral, Florida) where they were primarily used have high humidity causing condensation problems much of the time and so they needed a really good solution that will displace water, causing it to move away from whatever it is applied to and form a barrier that will last for a short time.
