Down Range Drills, Obligations of Professional Educators and Real World Training

Rob Pincus and Suresh Madhavan spend some time (starting at 2:24) really diving into the reason WHY 90% of the defensive training community took some time last week to call out some recklessly dangerous drills that were shown in a video from a defensive pistol class in PA... and some of the reasons why the other 10% was silent or is wrong on this issue.

Is this type of drill, that puts students directly downrange of other shooters, valuable in the first place?

What is the relevance of a set of "safety rules" without understanding safety as a concept?

Why is important for us to police our own in this way?

Is it more than just "stirring the pot" and causing "drama"?

What about the guys who know something is wrong, but are afraid of losing "friends", creating "enemies" or just having to invest their time in dealing with the social media fallout of expressing a strong opinion?

First and Foremost, there is the safety issue. It is not okay to take unreasonable risks with peoples lives. Students or Bystanders... and both were put in unnecessary danger by the drill run by "Garry" under the Rockwell Tactical Group banner. Thankfully, the leadership at Rockwell reviewed the video and considered the feedback from our community and they stepped up. They acknowledged that there were problems with the drill and made it clear that the instructor was working outside of the RTG Curriculum and they Suspended him from working under their banner. Professionals in this industry have an obligation to call that kind of stuff out... kudos to RTG for responding properly.

Meanwhile, the Firearms Training Industry has been criticized by anti-gun organizations for not being regulated by the government for decades. if for no other reason, everyone who cares about gun rights should care about the image of reckless behavior, particularly if it appears to be coming from a legitimate source.

In this video, we also address the idea that the drill somehow represented "real world training". It didn't. It was an awkward and slow choreographed drill that looked like nothing like a dynamic multiple person armed reposes in a crowd and offered nothing in terms of valuable tactics for such an event. We discussed some of the actual training strategies for preparing for such a thing and some great resources people can look to for more information.

I'll also note that, and we touched on it in this video, Suresh was a little reluctant to take this on... and he got bad advice from well intentioned friends that he should "stay out of it". Kudos to him for manning up and being part of Making Earth Better by getting this would-be instructor shut down and this dangerous practice of down range drills called out for what it is: Reckless Range Bravado.
