The mighty Krag! The turn of the century was a strange time back in the day for firearms.....the change from black powder to smokeless made for some strange evolutions and until things got sorted a few "experiments" were adopted, one by our own military, that were nothing but......revolutionary for their time.
The Krag was unique, smooth as silk, and well constructed from the finest materials. We would find during the Spanish American war however that those attributes did not win battles. Magazine cut offs to force the soldiers to fire as marksman.....rifleman....were in vogue on the Krag but the Mauser rifles we were up against showed that firepower.....lots and lots of rounds down range was a serious strategy to contend with. Luckily, straight up manpower won out....but we learned a lesson that we NEVER forgot. Outgunning the enemy was as viable as outsmarting or outmaneuvering them.
This Krag is not the same rifle from my video from years ago....that beauty was a loaner. I have since acquired my own, a 1899 manufactured JSA cartouche marked , 1902 Dixon sighted masterpiece. There are so many "history" videos on the Krag that I thought I would do a "function comparison" against what it replaced and what it was up against. Push feed is a bit lackluster compared to controlled feed as I demonstrate and, trust me, putting a handful of snap caps into that box under pressure was no picnic and the Mauser refinement is clear when function testing.
The SNAP CAPS used in this video which made this kind of function examination possible were purchased from RealisticSnapCaps.com and are of the finest quality and construction and are MADE IN USA with American made materials and equipment. Use discount code MILSURPGARAGE for 10% off any of the numerous pistol and rifle calibers on the website and also receive FREE SHIPPING! These are a priceless tool for function testing or tactical firearm drills.
Very, very good video. Thanks for sharing
