In Missouri, what are the laws concerning guns and schools?

Hi, I'm John Schleiffarth, Program Attorney from Missouri for U.S. LawShield.

We often get the question of whether or not you can carry a gun on a college campus in Missouri.

You can't carry a gun on a college campus in Missouri unless you have consent from the governing body of the school.

Another question I often get is whether or not you can have a handgun in your car when picking up or dropping off your children from school.

You can have a handgun in your car.

The rule is you can't take that handgun out of your car, or brandish that handgun and show it to someone else.

Likewise if you're parking in a school parking lot, you can have a gun in your car, but you can't take the gun out of the car, display the gun, or otherwise brandish the gun.

If you're at a school-sponsored event that's away from the school campus, the same laws apply as if you're on the campus of the school "” you need permission from the governing body of the school if you're going to have a gun at an official school-sponsored event.

If you're a teacher and you want to carry at a school, you need consent of the governing body of that school, unless you're a designated school-protection officer. If you're a designated school-protection officer you don't need consent of the governing body.
