During WWII the Japanese faced a shortage of war supplies. They signed a mutual defense action with the Axis power of Germany and Italy. The Japanese contracted with Italy to make a Type 38 Arisaka type rifle, known as the Type I (pronounced type "eye") which would be primarily used by naval troops.
