It always amazes me to see the "Low Power" of these 36 and .44 caliber service pistols, when compared to modern offerings. I don't remember ever reading about soldiers complaining that their pistols were under powered? Perhaps the softer lead balls drove deep into flesh and also flattened and expanded, giving superior wound effects compared with modern ball ammunition and some of the older hollow point designs in similar calibers?

The soft lead was very effective as an expanding bullet. The only issue was that it left lead behind in the barrel. That's why they started jacketing the bullets. Soft LED would not have worked in the machine guns of World War 1.

The soft lead not that any hits to a limb meant that the limb was lost. The bone would usually destroyed Beyond repair. Any hits to torso usually meant death. This was behind the thinking of banning dum dum rounds, hollow points, in the Geneva Convention.
